Leading the Leaders
Abbie Tan is a Year 3 Community Development student at Ngee Ann Polytechnic and was the chairperson of NP CF for AY2024/25. Chloe Wong is a Year 3 Engineering with Business student at Singapore Polytechnic and was the chairperson of SP CF for AY2024/25. We invited Abbie and Chloe to share a little as they step into their new roles as the new coordinators of the National Student Council (NSC) and student representatives on the FES board.
How did you feel stepping up as the NSC coordinators, as the leader of leaders?
Abbie: It was daunting at first to be stepping up and continuing leadership after my previous term ended. Moreover, there was a weight to this new responsibility – leading leaders who were themselves shepherding others too. But I felt that God was not done with me yet and was calling me to greater things, things that I may not understand now. Hence, as intimidating as it was, I was also excited to see what God has in store for the NSC this season. I choose to trust in Him amid uncertainty, and I am grateful to be able to continue serving in campus ministry.
Chloe: Stepping up as NSC student representative after my time of service on campus was a decision I prayed about for a long time. Having to lead a group of new leaders who are also leading their own CFs seemed like a challenge. However, the Lord works in many ways, and I felt that He gave me this opportunity to grow even further. Now, as I lead the new NSC, I trust that the Lord has greater things for the student ministry.
How has your leadership experience in FES and CF changed your view of what leadership is?
Abbie: Initially, I saw leadership as simply taking charge and making all the decisions, but over time, I have come to see that leadership is much less about authority and much more about servanthood. As such, my leadership experiences have concretely illustrated to me the true meaning of what a ‘Servant Leader’ is – one who leads not from a place of power but rather from love.
Just as Jesus put Himself at the feet of others, so should I – to lead selflessly with heart and humility. To lead is not to elevate myself but to stoop low to lift others. It is my prayer that in every opportunity I lead, I mirror Christ, who led with unwavering love.
Chloe: As a leader in CF, it gave me perspective as to what leadership really meant. A leader not only has authority but is one who puts themselves in a position to serve others with a willing heart. Leadership is deeply rooted in service, humility and love. The work of leading others is not done by my own strength, but requires prayer, discernment, and working together with my team. As I step up in NSC, I pray that the Lord will guides us with His wisdom to serve the community and Him.
